With the 2023 male and female ashes both been and gone I thought I would write my first JLA feature based upon a truly inspiring and impressive talk I was fortunate enough to attend.

The talk in question was given by Ebony Rainford-Brent, ex-professional cricketer and now accomplished conference speaker. For those who have been living under a rock, since retiring Ebony has become a regular pundit for the iconic Test Match Special and has appeared on Sky Sports, BBC Breakfast and Newsround.

As well as commentating worldwide as part of the TMS team she is the first Director of Women’s Cricket for Surrey CCC (the existence of the position is indicative of the growth of the women’s game in recent years).

Ebony spoke not only of her past achievements in the world of cricket but of her incredibly inspiring background – with grace, humility and humour. She captivated the room with her journey through sport, initially wishing to be a football player before she was spotted at a cricket-based open day, it was clear that she had natural talent and from there the rest is history.

Through her transparent and honest storytelling, Ebony shared the incredible highs and lows she experienced, not just in her cricketing career but also in life. It was clear that she had made a lasting impression on the audience as there simply wasn’t enough time to get through all the questions!

Ebony has played cricket in some of the toughest physical and mental conditions resulting in an incredible insight not only to the world of cricket but to the world of elite sport and beyond. She has also paved the way for so many, after becoming a much-beloved and respected character in the world of punditry. I personally can’t remember a test match without her voice reverberating around the commentary box!

Much like in her talk Ebony is unapologetically herself, which is truly refreshing and this steadfast commitment has not only earned her respect but has also made her an inspiration to countless individuals, both within and outside the cricketing world.

I would highly recommend Ebony to anyone looking for an inspirational speaker to captivate and excite an audience. Her story truly transcends the typical journey of an elite sportsman and is a testament to resilience, and determination in the pursuit of her passions.
