The former Editor and Group Content Director for the Independent and Evening Standard, Chris Blackhurst now serves as Executive Director at Sir Lynton Crosby’s strategy company. Chris has seen huge changes in the media landscape. From Leveson to social media to foreign ownership he has witnessed the effects of disruption first hand. With knowledge of and stories from the corridors of power in politics, media and commerce, he provides a view of where power lies, the likely outcome of key events, and how to communicate your message.


Chris Blackhurst was the Group Content Director for the Independent and Evening Standard newspapers, and Head of Business for both titles. Prior to that he was Editor of the Independent and before that he spent almost a decade as City Editor of the Evening Standard. He now serves as Executive Director at the widely respected research and campaign advisory co-founded by Sir Lynton Crosby, CTF Partners.

Starting his career covering business for Euromoney, Chris moved to the Independent as Westminster correspondent covering politics in the tumultuous period running up to the 1997 election. He then became deputy editor before taking the same role at the Express and Sunday Express. He was then City Editor of the Evening Standard, covering key business news for London and meeting some of the biggest names in commerce. Shortly after the Evening Standard and the Independent became part of the same group, he was appointed Editor of the latter.

Chris took charge of the Independent just as the Leveson enquiry into the practises and ethics of newspapers was starting up. He became a vocal commentator on the issues with both a view inside the industry, but also from a title not involved in hacking and the other transgressions many of their peers were.

As Editor, Chris oversaw dramatic changes at the paper and within the industry. He provides an insight into the media world and how it’s been disrupted, from ownership to online news delivery and social media. He looks at how this move has parallels in other industries as well as broader areas of leadership, change management, and the reputation and portrayal of business in the media. He also considers the good, bad and ugly sides of journalism, as well as stories from David Cameron’s PR days, why Philip Green threatened to beat him up, and Richard Branson’s personal management tips.

Chris has continued to write on business as well as working in strategic communications advising governments, political parties, businesses and individuals with the renown Lynton Crosby and his company.
