Steve served as HQ psychologist to Team GB at three Olympic Games. He also worked with the England Cricket Team for 16 years - during which time they regained the Ashes from Australia after 18 years and went on to reach No.1 in the world rankings for the first time ever. Steve considers resilience to be a crucial factor in organisational performance and outlines a range of techniques for creating the right mindset for thriving under pressure.

Working with Dave Brailsford, Steve Peters, Chris Boardman and others in the Marginal Gains group, Phil offers a unique insight into how British Cycling and Team Sky became world-beaters. With examples from the likes of Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy, he considers innovation, elite performance, and leadership culture from one of the few areas that had input in almost every aspect of the team from medical to training to equipment design.

The former Royal Marine (aka The Arctic Tractor) led the first unsupported UK expedition from Canada to the geographic North Pole. After taking disaffected British children to African classrooms with Channel 4, Alan showed us the method to making good with a new book: Lead Yourself To Success. In presentations he emphasises the need to question norms, build total trust and make decisions purely based on the facts. Alan also advocates leading from behind.

On the track Seb’s talent and commitment earned eleven world records and two Olympic gold medals; he has since led the most successful Games in recent history. After serving as one of many Vice Presidents Seb is now tasked with turning around the IAAF and restoring the reputation of international athletics, in the gaze of the world’s media. In speeches he shares the lessons as an athlete and as a leader delivering a vision, managing crisis and bringing about change.

Pierluigi is the most widely admired of all World Cup referees. The one-time financial advisor argues that he practised a simple creed as relevant to business as football: analyse each team’s tactics to ensure you’re in the right place at the right time; defuse any tense situation quickly and fairly; and above all learn from your mistakes: “In a fast moving environment, with a number of factors in play, use all the resources at your disposal to make the best possible decision.”

After his partnership with Matt Pinsent, the double Olympic champion teamed up with Ben Fogle for a series of adventures. They rowed across the Atlantic and raced to the South Pole. In their next challenge (to run, swim and cycle across the States), James was very nearly killed by a truck. He endured a gruelling physical and neurological recovery – then took part in the coldest race on earth. James explains why we should all continue to test our limits.

Lawrence won virtually every accolade in rugby. He made 85 appearances in England’s back row, many as captain, and was the only player on the field for every minute of every match in the famous World Cup campaign. Since hanging up his boots he has cycled from Rome to Edinburgh for Sport Relief. Lawrence talks about pushing for success, even when the odds are against you.

With no experience of extreme sport, Ann found herself applying to join a polar expedition. She has since become part of the first women’s team in the world to walk to both Poles, and is part of the Catlin Arctic Survey, a project to measure the thickness of the Arctic ice cap. Ann describes the sheer joy of pushing out of her comfort zone and the lessons learned, like never asking someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself.

Possibly the best scrum half in the world, Matt’s performance in the World Cup-winning England rugby team, and especially his pass that led to the winning kick, earned enormous respect within the sport. A former England captain, Matt is a proven leader and a natural team player and he combines his playing experience with his more recent business lessons to consider the nature of teams, leadership and performance culture. He’s also an accomplished presenter of conferences and awards, where he can pair up with his Question of Sport sparring-partner Phil Tufnell.
