Biography

Laszlo Bock was Google’s Senior Vice President of People Operations, a role that saw him maintain the firm’s innovative and robust culture whilst growing the company from 6,000 to over 60,000 employees. His bestselling management manifesto Work Rules! makes use of pioneering behavioural economics to teach companies how to succeed in attracting and keeping the very best talent.

After serving in executive roles at General Electric and as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, Laszlo joined Google, partnering closely with CEOs Larry Page and Eric Schmidt on major business and product decisions. He is credited with creating the field of People Analytics, applying academic rigour and innovation to the art of people management. His work on Project Oxygen dramatically improved manager quality at Google; Project Aristotle revealed the factors vital to outstanding team performance, and his Unconscious Bias programme tackled the state of diversity within the company. Google now receives over 3,000,000 job applications each year, and has been named the Best Company to Work For in more than 30 surveys around the world.

After leaving the search giant, Laszlo wrote
Work Rules!: Insights from Inside Google That Will Transform How You Live and Lead in which he examines how the world of work is changing and how both businesses and their employees need to change with it. He also advised government, including giving testimony to the House Judiciary Committee on immigration policy.

Laszlo aims to make working environments better through machine learning. His startup, Humu, uses decades of research to help individuals become better leaders, managers and teammates. In speeches, Laszlo provides examples of healthy and toxic cultures from a range of industries, unpacking them for audiences in his amiable, engaging style. He reveals how Google has earned its reputation as an employer, and shares easy-to-implement principles that will help companies build their own.
