Eddie Jones made headlines when he became the first foreign-born head coach of the England national rugby union team. During Eddie’s tenure the team became one of the most formidable in the world, with an impressive run of results.
Australian Eddie played club rugby at home and in England before retiring to focus on life as a schoolteacher. He then returned to the sport coaching his former club, Randwick, before a stint in Japan, and then back to Australia. He led club side ACT Brumbies to their first ever title in the league which encompasses Australasia, South Africa, Japan, and Argentina-based sides. This saw him move into international rugby, first with the Australian A side, then with the full national team. He led the team through an eventful four years, including their loss to England in the 2003 World Cup final.
After a return to club rugby, Eddie was appointed technical advisor to the South African team, and his role in helping the team to their 2007 World Cup win was widely praised. Following further forays into club rugby he joined the Japan national team. His impact was swift, encouraging the team to find their own game instead of taking too much from other nations. He led the team to their first ever European victories, and despite not progressing from the group stages, an impressive 2015 World Cup performance (including a win over South Africa).
During his time as head coach with England, Eddie’s pugnacious, uncompromising leadership style yielded immediate results for a team struggling after a period of transition. His approach consistently focused on preparation, effort, and attitude whilst his win-at-all-costs ethos and straight-talking personality won over fans and media alike.
In his first full year in charge, he led England to their first Grand Slam in thirteen years. During this period, his England side became only the second international rugby team to go the entire calendar year unbeaten. This led to Jones being named as the World Rugby Coach of the Year in 2017. Under the stewardship of Eddie, England have won the Six Nations Championship three times. He also led the side to their first Rugby World Cup final since 2007.
