Cathy Newman

Fee Band

Cathy co-presents Channel 4’s evening news bulletin having formerly covered politics for the programme. She’s also led the broadcaster’s FactCheck Blog separating the truth from the spin in Westminster. She’s guested on Have I Got News, argued that most MPs deserve more pay, and demonstrated Gangnam Style live on the news. After dinner Cathy considers everything from fake news to Nigel Farage and recounts close encounters with Bill Clinton and keeping a straight face whilst reading the headlines.

Biography

Cathy Newman is one of Channel 4 News' main studio presenters and was the first woman to co-host the programme. She joined Channel 4 News as political correspondent and she continues to write on Westminster for the Daily Telegraph.

As well as the main news programme, Cathy has also fronted Channel 4 documentaries on faith schools and police investigations. She co-presented the broadcaster’s Alternative Election Night with Jeremy Paxman in 2015, and contributed to the 2010 coverage as well. With Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Cathy also took an alternative look at the government’s cuts programme in How to Save £100bn.

Since joining Channel 4 News, Cathy has broken a number of big political stories including the arrest of David Cameron’s trusted aide Steve Hilton, the revelation that the Home Office were employing illegal immigrants, and Gordon Brown’s insistence that Labour donor Ronald Cohen receive a knighthood. Cathy’s confrontation with Peter Mandelson over his stand-off with newspaper bosses became a surprise YouTube hit, whilst her stewardship of the Orwell Prize- nominated FactCheck Blog uncovered the truth behind everything from budgets and spending reviews to crime figures and politician’s overuse of certain words.

Prior to Channel 4, Cathy hosted GMTV’s The Sunday Programme, and served as the Financial Times’ chief political correspondent after a period covering politics and the media for the business daily. Before the FT she worked as media business correspondent at the Independent, and away from more serious issues has appeared on Have I Got News For You.
