Synopsis

Director of Global Indicators and Analysis at the World Bank, Augusto is a leading global economist. In addition to the World Bank he has served as Chief Economist and Director of the Global Competitiveness Program at the World Economic Forum, Senior International Economist at Lehman Brothers, and represented the IMF in Russia. He specialises in areas of global institutions and cooperation and broader globalisation and development.

Biography

Augusto López-Claros is Director of Global Indicators and Analysis with the World Bank Group. He was Chief Economist and Director of the Global Competitiveness Program at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, where he was the editor of the Global Competitiveness Report, the Forum’s flagship publication.

Before joining the Forum, Augusto was an Executive Director of Lehman Brothers in London and Senior International Economist. He was the International Monetary Fund’s resident representative in the Russian Federation just after the end of the Soviet regime. Before joining the IMF, he was professor of economics at the University of Chile in Santiago having previously studied in the UK and US.

Augusto has written, consulted and spoken on areas including the European monetary system, fiscal policy, globalisation, and the effects of ICT on economies. He has also written articles on Europe, the IMF, Russia, and the role of innovation in the economy. He specialises on the interdependence and cooperation in the emergence of global institutions, elements of a successful approach to economic development, and aspects of management of the globalisation process.
