BIOGRAPHY
One time Press Awards Columnist of the Year, Matthew Norman, is The Independent's political commentator and media diarist. Beginning his career in journalism as a feature writer for the Mail on Sunday, Matthew then took over as the Evening Standard's television reviewer. It was his stint on the Guardian Diary that really brought Matthew public recognition. A mischievous political gossip column, it became famous for vicious feuding with such New Labour titans as Peter Mandelson, Alastair Campbell and Cherie Blair, who threatened to sue for libel many times.
Matthew is also a respected restaurant critic, having written for a number of newspapers. He was awarded the British Press Awards prize for Food and Drink Writer of the Year for his work in the Sunday Telegraph. He currently reviews restaurants for the Guardian.
Matthew writes a twice-weekly sports column in the Evening Standard and, on one occasion, contrived to get himself, and the entire paper, banned for a while by Tottenham Hotspur for remarks about the chairman.
After dinner, Matthew keeps audiences entertained with tales from the press gallery.
