Alistair McGowan
Actor & Impressionist
Impressionist
Radio 4's favourite impressionist broke through on Big Breakfast as 'the man of 1000 voices.' With a remarkable, instant recall of 350 voices from politics, showbiz and sport, the star of Dead Ringers and The Impressions Show can respond on the spot to virtually any audience request from Brian Cox to Barack Obama. He's also a keen astronomer.
Jon Culshaw is seen by many as being Britain's best impressionist with a repertoire of over 350 voices covering politics, sport and celebrity from Boris Johnson to Alan Carr, Brian Cox to Barack Obama, Russell Crowe to Michael McIntryre.
Originally a DJ, Jon won a Radio 1 talent contest and joined the team on the seminal television satire Spitting Image. He played 40 characters, including Frank Bruno, Michael Portillo, Bill Clinton and Liam Gallagher. Jon then became ‘the man of a thousand voices’ on Channel 4’s Big Breakfast before returning to radio where he made international headlines by calling the Downing Street switchboard and fooling the operators with his William Hague impression. After being put through to Tony Blair, the incident was raised at Prime Minister’s Questions and reported in Hansard.
With an unmatched versatility, Jon found mainstream success with the radio and TV show Dead Ringers leading to his own BBC series, The Impressionable Jon Culshaw, which was followed by Jon Culshaw’s Commercial Breakdown and The Impressions Show with Culshaw and Stephenson. He is a regular guest on radio and TV comedy and chat shows from The Now Show to Parkinson, and frequently appears on election coverage, providing necessary comic relief with impromptu impressions of politicians and commentators.
Away from comedy, Jon’s love of science and astronomy have seen him join the world’s longest running television programme The Sky at Night, as well as writing a column, Jon Culshaw’s Exoplanet Excursions, for the show’s magazine. He has also appeared alongside Brian Cox on Stargazing Live and The Infinite Monkey Cage.
“Jon was excellent, he hit a perfect level with our audience. We hope to be able to book him again soon”
Jon Culshaw was the perfect entertainment host, with impressions and humour ideal for the average age of Picon’s membership. Furthermore he was very engaging with all contacts at the meal table and comfortably posed with many members who requested selfies.
Couldn’t have done better. Thoroughly enjoyed Johns after dinner section.
Jon was charming and entertaining, however I was slightly disappointed that his act included approx 50% of the same material that it did when we booked him 3 years ago. Also, he didn’t seem as energetic as he was then.
I just wanted to thank you for attending and speaking at our annual dinner last week, your impressions were very entertaining and certainly went down vert well with our members and their guests. In particular you're impression of me went down a storm!
The event overall was a huge success and we have a lot of positive response. Thanks also for the assistance with the "Charity Draw". I had some concern this might be a dead slot in the evening and something of an anti climax but your relaxed style and quick quips ensured this was not the case.
The audience thought Jon was great. He was also a very nice man and pleasant to work with
