Biography

Toju Duke is an AI adviser, consultant and author helping organisations to build efficient, ethical, safe and inclusive AI. She worked at Google for ten years, including as a Programme Manager on Responsible AI, leading various programmes across Google's product and research teams with a primary focus on frontier models and responsible AI processes. Before that, Toju was the EMEA product lead for Google Travel, and worked as a specialist across Google Travel and Shopping.

Toju explores responsible AI practices, AI readiness and governance, as well as the future of AI and humanity, and AI business transformation. With experience in advertising, retail, not-for-profit and tech, she addresses how organisations of all types can drive innovation and growth whilst building trust. She leads research on responsible AI in generative AI, working with academics and industry professionals, and she wrote Building Responsible AI Algorithms, which has been adopted by several universities globally. Her second book, Responsible AI in Practice, co-authored with Professor Paolo Giudici, provides detailed guidance on machine learning evaluation for practitioners, and is the first practical book on AI risk assessment and management.

Toju is also the founder and CEO of Diverse AI, a community interest organisation with a mission to support and champion underrepresented groups to build a diverse and inclusive AI future, whilst also developing new diverse datasets through research practices. She is also building the first-of-its-kind image dataset containing the images and cultures of 2.6 billion people across the world who do not have access to the internet. Toju was previously the UK lead for Women in AI, a non-profit global organisation with a mission to drive gender diversity in AI. She also served on the programme committee for the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence / Association of Computing Machinery conference on AI, Ethics and Society, and has advised businesses on responsible AI, and governments on policy, AI strategy and AI sovereignty.
