Danilo McGarry is an authority on artificial intelligence and digital transformation, and an influential voice on intelligent automation. He has worked with some of the world’s biggest companies across a range of sectors on AI projects and processes, including during his time as Head of AI at Citigroup, and Head of AI at UnitedHealth Group. He is now CEO of AI First Maker, helping companies become AI-first organisations.
Born in Latin America and raised across multiple countries, Danilo studied in the UK before joining BNP Paribas, then JP Morgan before joining the Royal Bank of Canada during the 2008 financial crisis. At RBC he designed and implemented AI and automation strategies that helped the bank to navigate the turmoil, and he became one of the youngest directors in the institution’s history. Danilo went on to lead some of the largest corporate AI programmes seen at the time, including as Head of AI at Citigroup (Markets Division). Whilst serving as Head of AI at UnitedHealth Group, one of the biggest companies in the US, he operated the world’s largest digital worker programme, managing 3,500 digital employees across the healthcare division.
Working in private equity, investment and consulting, Danilo has helped businesses realise AI strategies that have seen exponential growth in sales and valuations. He is a partner and shareholder at Ective, helping multinational clients such as Volvo, BASF and Linde become AI-first organisations across multiple territories. He is a shareholder in Certified Renewables, reflecting his commitment to aligning technological progress with environmental responsibility, serves on the board of the AI Forum, and is a member of the European Commission’s AI Alliance.
Exploring the present and future of AI, Danilo considers how companies adapt to the rapidly changing technology and the impact on work, people, leadership. He considers how organisations innovate at scale, from low-risk pilot programmes to company-wide, high-impact implementation. Driven by a desire to demystify and democratise AI and technology, Danilo has spoken at both TED and the US, and his ideas have been taught at over 100 universities worldwide. He is a Technology Columnist for WIRED Magazine, and has written for The Times, Bloomberg and the Financial Times.
