Martin has progressed from copper to Crimewatch presenter. In between he enjoyed a successful career as a rugby forward, earning 31 international caps. With natural comic timing, the 6’10” colossus compares his own sport to football, and reveals how he became a part of the Harry Potter phenomenon.

Biography

At 6'10" Martin Bayfield was one of the tallest men in rugby, a gift he used to full advantage as one of England's most potent forwards. After retiring, his height helped him secure the part of Robbie Coltrane’s body double as the giant Hagrid in the Harry Potter films.

On the field Martin enjoyed a successful international career, winning 31 England caps and two Grand Slams. He played in the World Cup in South Africa and represented the British Lions in New Zealand. Injury finished his career just as the game turned professional (as an amateur he combined playing with his job in the police), and he found himself uncomfortable in a coaching role. Luckily, a chance encounter with a film executive led to an invite to the set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone where the production needed someone who might pass as a giant. His two weeks of work as an extra led to over 20 weeks of work as an actor across the whole film series.

Martin’s brush with Hollywood was the start of a new career, with more acting roles and a move into TV presenting. He’s since become an established member of the BT Sport and ITV Sport commentary teams. He’s fronted coverage of the NFL and The World’s Strongest Man contest, and joined the presenting team on Crimewatch. He’s even tried his comedic skills at the Edinburgh Fringe and displayed his kitchen skills on Celebrity MasterChef.

A natural and accomplished host and a hugely entertaining speaker, with impeccable comic timing, Martin appeals to all audiences. He covers serious points on how teams operate and individuals thrive when they are encouraged to push the boundaries of their responsibilities. He also recounts entertaining tales from the rugby pitch to the film set to the police force.
