Biography
Steve Durcan is a former RAF fighter pilot and test pilot who now brings his military experience to challenge and transform leadership and high-performance teams. He spent two decades with the RAF flying and testing advanced fighter aircraft in some of the most demanding operational environments, with little margin for error or indecision. He took his lessons first to Formula 1, a natural home for high-risk, high speed operational experience, and now to other sports and businesses who benefit from his perspective on change, communication and collaboration.
After injury brought his aviation career to an abrupt and difficult end, a chance viewing of Netflix’s series Drive to Survive sparked an idea in Steve. He contacted McLaren at a time when the team were struggling and he felt he could see some of the reasons why. He joined the team on a challenging race weekend then saw them go from top 10 to dead last, but presented a stark example of where things were going wrong. Within two years of Steve joining, the team went from the back of the grid to back-to-back Constructors' World Championships, and one of the most remarkable turnarounds in the sport’s recent history. The transformation was not primarily driven by resources or new technical advantage. Instead, Steve challenged all part of the team and embedded the high-performance systems and behaviours he had been a part of in his flying career. He shared concepts around decisive communication, shared situational awareness, a commitment to continuous improvement, and a learning-over-blaming mindset. He identified that how the team was structured, and how their processes had evolved without challenge, were fundamental to their performance. He introduced new ways to communicate, debrief, and decide.
Since his success with McLaren Steve has gone on to work with Arsenal FC, working with the team and management on performance, mindset and teamwork. He also worked within government on the latest generation of fighter planes, drawing together frontline experience with the operational and personal challenges of complex organisations.
Steve combines elite military flying with elite sport, as well as his personal journey, from joining the RAF and rising through the ranks, through a dream of becoming an astronaut cut short by injury, to finding new purpose in Formula 1. He demonstrates both the theory and the practice of resilience, adaptability and the power of looking at challenges differently. He explores high-risk, demanding environments, and applies gripping real-world stories with practical frameworks that help leaders navigate change, create alignment, and turn a single vision into shared results. He looks at how organisations define and communicate their goals, create standards and behaviours to achieve them, and execute with accountability but not compromise. From how organisations can engineer high-performance by examining the architecture of successful teams to how to navigate organisational and culture change, Steve considers the planning, communication and structures needed to succeed.
