Virtual Magicians

Like all of the performers we book here at JLA Speaker Bureau, almost a year ago the fabulous magicians we work with on a regular basis saw their corporate bookings vanish in a puff of smoke (pun intended). National lockdowns were introduced, causing the country’s events industry to crawl to a devastating and grinding halt and leaving the world of magic hanging in the balance.

It was (and continues to be) an extremely uncertain time for most performers, but what has really shined through is a sense of resilience and the ability to adapt and change. This has been particularly evident with the magicians we continue to book. We have been really excited as a team to see how the magicians we previously collaborated with for in-person events pre-lockdown, have risen to the challenge of switching to the virtual world and are providing fantastic content for corporate engagements over platforms such as Zoom.

This was witnessed by the JLA team a few weeks ago: where master mindreader Colin Cloud transformed a standard Zoom call into a brilliant display of dazzling deduction and skill leaving our (notoriously difficult to impress!) JLA team in awe and leading to further, extremely important Zoom meetings afterwards to discuss how on earth he pulled it all off! It was the perfect way to finish the week and as a team it allowed us to chat about something different for a while other than which London parks we were planning to traverse for the hundredth time that weekend. I wish I could give you more details of Colin’s tricks and illusions here but half of the fun, of course, is in the mystery…

Another performer wowing on the web and bookable through JLA Speaker Bureau is street magician Troy – already a big screen name after his hit E4 series, we first starting booking Tory for in-person events in 2014 and after brilliant feedback we weren’t surprised when he was a roaring success at our virtual Real Variety Show back in September, enlisting the help of two of our lovely clients to aid with his slick tricks.

So why have these intrepid illusionists resonated so much, even in a time when the only way to watch them is from our laptops and PCs in the comfort of our own homes? A lot of it has to do with escapism – these individuals bring unfiltered wonder into our lives at a time when morale is low and entertainment may only extend as far as the latest viral hit on Netflix!

Technology like Zoom also means there’s a global network of talent ready and waiting – Colin Cloud, for example, performed live from Las Vegas, bridging the thousands of miles between us. Although there was the time difference to contend with, it certainly saved on travel expenses!

More than that, seeing these guys in action is the perfect reminder of what to expect when society reopens and live performance returns – when hundreds of people can finally witness live performance in unison again. Until then, it turns out Zoom can be more magical than we thought.

The names mentioned here are just the tip of the iceberg. If you are interested in knowing more about Colin Cloud, Troy or any of the other  wonderful speakers, presenters and performers on our website, please contact JLA speaker bureau here.
