Imagine yourself face to face with powerful, successful personalities or celebrity speakers. People you admire, look up to – even fear.
Then imagine having to make small talk. WAH!
Don’t be alarmed blog readers – these celebrity speakers are just like you and I. And even though our achievements pale in comparison to theirs, they will still pass the time with us.
When JLAers are at events ensuring all is going smoothly, a key part of the job can be to liaise with or look after the celebrity speaker on site. I have conducted a small survey amongst my colleagues to get grasp on the types of small talk they have indulged in with celebrity speakers at corporate events.
Here are my highlights:
Jack chatted double glazing with Joanna Lumley. God, we love Lumley.
Jeremy Frewer gabbed about jewellery with Janet Street Porter. She even let him try on a diamond ring.
Comedian Nina Conti had to borrow Sinead’s shoes.
I won’t say who, but a former senior political person threatened one of us with death if we didn’t vote Labour.
Allan and Paxman dived in to the trouble with declining numbers of Salmon in Scottish rivers.
Oliver and Ken Segall (Apple) mulled over the comparative merits of New Balance and Nike Free trainers. Deep.
I myself have discussed Safari holidays with Alan Hansen, wedding preparation with Jessica Ennis and sandwich fillings with Tim Berners Lee. He likes BLT (You heard it here first).
You might think a celebrity speaker who has had a very serious job might be hard work – NAY! We’ve chatted with Mervyn King about the winter Olympics for goodness sake!
The winner by far is the friendly face of space himself, Brian Cox. He has chatted Lego with Emily, how post it notes are made with Sinead and even asked Oliver what HE thought was out there in the universe. WOW.
Be bold and chat nonsense! Celebrity speakers are just people too.
