I have never been the biggest sports fan around, aside from a little interest in the underdog of the year at Wimbledon and the odd time that Ireland are good at something. So it was quite a surprise to me as I sat down to write this blog that it was the motivational speakers from a sporting background that I was most inspired by! This little bit of exposure has really won me over to the world of sporting events. I am even watching the World Cup! So now I will tell you why I – the typical sport cynic – have been totally convinced of the lessons you can learn from sports motivational speakers! The Tour de France will travel through the country next week, bringing speed and drama to the roads of England. Which of the great motivational speakers can feed this excitement into your team better than Sir Chris Hoy? I was totally amazed as he demystified ‘marginal gains’ and demonstrated the even the smallest lifestyle changes helped to go from good to great. He proved the success behind their strategy: breaking down an ambitious goal into achievable chunks and combining this with managing all the things that are within your control. As I write, I realise this is common sense, but when a 7 time Olympic medal winner tells you that it worked for him you realise the value of motivational speakers telling you what you may already know! His anecdotes paint a picture of the lengths the team would go to in order to manage as many ‘controllables’ as they could. My favourite has to be the one about the travelling mattress… (I couldn’t possibly give away the rest!) Wimbledon fever grips tennis fans all over the world as we enter into the final week. As motivational speakers go, Martina Navratilova has to be the cream of the crop. Not only does her determination to become the greatest female tennis player in the world impress an audience, but it is when she speaks about this combined with the hurdles she has overcome in her personal life, you can’t help but be in awe. She convinced me that anything is possible with her humble description of winning Wimbledon and what it meant to her following the personal sacrifices she made to achieve her goals. Her funny stories of embarrassing moments married with a truly inspiring attitude to seemingly impossible goals made her my favourite of all the motivational speakers I have seen. So there you have it; my top two motivational speakers for the summer, inspired by the great sporting event line up we have got for the next few months!
