Funny Girls

There’s nothing particularly funny about the fact that when it comes to comedy, men are still taking centre stage. As a speaker bureau, we receive hundreds of enquiries and bookings for comedians every year, and there is no denying that the majority of comedians we book are male. So where are all the girls? Well, it’s estimated that women still make up only 25% of comedians on the circuit, and this doesn’t have us laughing (this is 2017 after all!)

Luckily though, it’s not all bad news! Over the last few years, we have seen women rising through the ranks of comedy, brandishing their stilettos in the face of inequality and proving that women are just as capable as men of making us laugh until we cry. Television channels have taken steps towards achieving equality in comedy by prohibiting all male panel shows (somewhat controversially for some) and it finally feels as though female stand ups are getting more of the exposure that they deserve – it turns out that girls are actually pretty funny!

One of the benefits of working at a speaker bureau is that I have had the opportunity to see a wide range of comedians in action. There is no question that many of the ‘stand out stand ups’ I have seen have been female, proving that there is no shortage of hysterically funny women out there. So, here are a handful of the trailblazing female comedians that our speaker bureau has to offer. With every punch line they pack, these talented ladies are smashing their way through the comedic glass ceiling.

Katherine Ryan

If you’ve turned on your TV at all in the past year, chances are you’ll have seen Katherine on your screen. The jewel of the speaker bureau crown, Britain is utterly taken with this Canadian funny girl and it’s easy to see why. Katherine is completely at ease in front of any audience and is never (ever) afraid to say exactly what she thinks!

Holly Walsh

With a Cambridge degree under her belt, there is no denying that Holly’s comedy skills are genius, but it’s her vivaciousness and brilliant timing that will win over any audience. Off stage, Holly is as down to earth and friendly as you’d expect. Also, if you’re curious to know how a Venn diagram can be funny, look no further!

Shappi Khorsandi

Iranian born Shappi is one of the most charming comedians you will come across and knows exactly how to ridicule herself in the most hilarious and entertaining way. But don’t let her polite demeanour fool you, with her razor sharp wit, Shappi also knows exactly how to play her audience, and will always leave everyone in fits of laughter.

Kerry Godliman

Kerry’s observational wit is absolutely spot on, making her utterly relatable. She has the rare ability to have a whole room in complete stitches. Performing recently at our real variety show, Kerry instantly won over the crowd. Her delightful cynicism means you’ll leave wishing Kerry was your best friend, (and believe me, she’s definitely funnier than the one you’ve already got!).

Jo Caulfield

We love Jo! As well as being an extremely funny and talented comedian, off stage everyone comments on how delightful and easy she is to work with. What makes Jo unique is that she always does her homework on the audience she’s performing for, making her sets fantastically personal and inclusive. She is a naturally brilliant performer.

Nina Conti

Nina is unbelievably skillful and has one of the most hilarious acts I have ever seen. I am always completely bowled over by her ability to think on her feet. Her performances are completely interactive, and no two are ever the same, mostly due to the fact that Nina (and the audience) are constantly at the mercy of her somewhat outspoken companion, Monkey.

These are just a handful of the funny women we work with at JLA speaker bureau. If you would like to know more about any of the comedians featured, or if you need any further suggestions, please contact us.
