John and his research team at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University provide design advice to some of the world’s largest companies. Specialising in the lifestyle, trends and tastes of the rapidly evolving Chinese consumer, John has devised innovative systems to steer development of everything from domestic lighting to paint colours. He offers sharp insight into the collective mind-sets of 150 million middle class and another 300 million who are just beginning to benefit from economic boom.
John Fu is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sociology and an associate professor at the School of Media and Design at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is an expert in design and the Chinese consumer market and counts many of the world’s largest companies as clients.
After graduating from the School of Design, Southern Yangtze University, John focused his research on the lifestyle, trends and tastes of the Chinese consumer. John and his department at
Jiao Tong study unique forms of consumer segmentation and survey data to build not just the usual reports, but genuine design solutions. They have worked with companies including Yamaha, Philips, Panasonic, GE, Dulux, Mazda, AkzoNobel, Audi and Lenovo on products as divers as domestic lighting, electric bikes, and paint colours.
John helps multinational enterprises to understand the Chinese market better and helps local companies to fully utilise the methods of design research. As technology and affluence become more and more widespread in China, he examines the trends and the history of the Chinese consumer; what they want, what they will want, and how it will look.
