Acclaimed economic thinker and author Chandran Nair is the Founder and CEO of the Global Institute For Tomorrow (GIFT). He is a leading voice on rethinking the economic relationship between Asia and the West, and where Asian economies should seek growth.
In GIFT, Chandran leads what he believes is a first - an organisation focused on the relationship of Asian society and values with those of the rest of the world. He combines this leadership of GIFT with roles including a professorship at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, chairing an investment company and advising businesses on strategic management.
Whilst Chairman of the Asia-Pacific region of Environmental Resource Management (ERM)Consultancy, he built the company in to the leading consultancy of its type in the region, working for governments, multi-national companies, and organisations including the united nations environment programme, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank.
It was during his time at the ERM that Chandran became an advocate for a new, sustainable approach to development in Asia. He argues the old, Western consumption based model could not be exported to Asia, both for regional political, social and economic reasons, and also for the sake of the whole world. He promotes a new type of capitalism which would not rely on the West forcing developing economies to either consume more or produce more for them - a system with profound problems for all concerned.
