Mel is Microsoft’s former Digital Evangelist, responsible for the software giant’s on-line ad services plus their use of social media. He is the co-author of the book Pioneers of Digital in which he speaks to some of the biggest names in online with lessons from Apple, Google, and the 2008 Obama campaign. Mel is passionate about the power of online as a key part of a brand and how company strategy must be flexible in this fast-changing environment.
Mel Carson was Microsoft’s Digital Marketing Evangelist. He was ultimately responsible for all areas of Microsoft’s online and social media presence and their advertising platforms. He was key to setting up the platform that powers Bing.
British born Mel was an actor for a while before moving into the world of online advertising. He worked for the nascent search company 24/7 Search on their advertising and sponsorship before moving to Microsoft’s adCentre and helping to launch their PPC (pay per click) advertising.
As Digital Marketing Evangelist Mel oversaw Microsoft Advertising’s global social media strategy and customer interaction via blogs, forums, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other community sites. He has represented Microsoft’s ad division all over the world in person and became an authority mentoring senior executives on how to communicate via social media and how vital it is for them.
Mel regularly contributes to media and commentary pieces on social media and was Media Week’s digital blogger. Mel’s departure from the software giant generated huge amounts of feedback from his thousands of Twitter follows and blog readers. He now heads up his own digital consultancy aimed to ‘making brands brilliant’ and is the co-author of Pioneers of Digital, a series of interviews with leading digital innovators from Biz Stone to Stephen Fry.
Mel highlights the increasing importance of mobile to brands online and the necessity of companies evolving their strategy from the ground level instead of being reactive and trying to catch up once trends become popular.
