Browne grew BP from a two pipeline player into one of the world’s biggest companies. He pulled off huge mergers, challenged the industry status quo and became the first oil CEO to acknowledge the risks posed by climate change. In speeches he examines the natural elements shaping our lives, shares strategic insights, and reflects on his own experience of homophobia.


Biography

Lord Browne is the former Group Chief Executive of BP. He led the company towards becoming a global energy player with a strategy of expansion, acquisition and diversification including the merger with Amoco and the establishment of Russian business TNK-BP.

Joining BP in as a university apprentice, Lord Browne held a variety of exploration and production posts in Anchorage, New York, San Francisco, London and Canada. He then became Group Treasurer and Chief Executive of BP Finance International. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Standard Oil Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Following the BP/Standard merger, in addition to his role as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of BP America, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Standard Oil Production Company. John later became MD and CEO of BP Exploration in London, joined the Board of The British Petroleum Company plc before being appointed Group Chief Executive. Following the merger of BP and Amoco, he became Group Chief Executive of BP Amoco.

After leaving BP, Lord Browne served as MD of private equity company Riverstone, and as a non-executive director of the Intel Corporation and of Goldman Sachs, as a trustee of The British Museum, a member of the Governing Body of the London Business School and a member of the Supervisory Board of DaimlerChrysler.

The first CEO of a Fortune 500 company to be openly gay, John has led calls for increased diversity and inclusion at board level and throughout business and has written a book on the subject,

He has also written on subjects from engineering to the world-changing effects of minerals, as well as titles including Connect: How Companies Succeed By Engaging Radically With Society and Beyond Business: An Inspirational Memoir From a Remarkable Leader.

Lord Brown is also Emeritus Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, a trustee of the Conference Board, Inc, a Vice President and Member of the Board of the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum, and a former President of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Looking Ahead to International Women’s Day

We were joined by four fantastic speakers to look ahead at International Women’s Day. With the theme of this year’s event being #InspireInclusion, we were lucky enough to hear from four women who have each blazed a trail in their respective fields: CEO of Channel 4, Alex Mahon; the former Australian Prime Minister and Chair of Kings’ Global Institute of Women’s Leadership, Julia Gillard; one of the leading voices in football, Eniola Aluko MBE; and broadcaster and journalist, Samira Ahmed.
