Biography

Chaka Khan is an award-winning performer and one of the best-known soul singers from the past four decades, regularly cited as an influence on many of the world’s biggest artists. Her powerful but soulful voice is best known from hits including I’m Every Woman, Ain’t Nobody, and I Feel For You.

An enthusiastic singer since childhood, Chaka performed with numerous bands around her native Chicago before being spotted by a new disco group, Rufus. She was chosen to front the band who went on to be one of the most successful of the disco era with a string of top ten singles and albums including You Got the Love, and Ain’t Nobody. Chaka became central to Rufus’ success, playing percussion, co-writing songs, and providing a live focus with her charismatic performances.

After leaving Rufus, Chaka’s solo debut sold over a million copies on release and featured the single I’m Every Woman, another hit that has been covered many times, although Chaka’s version remains the definitive one. She also adapted with the times, incorporating more funk, soul and hip-hop influences and the rap-infused I Feel For You established her as an important artist to a newer generation of fans.

Chaka has gone on to produce albums covering disco, funk, soul, gospel and jazz. She has collaborated with artists including De La Soul, Prince, Ray Charles, Mary J Blige, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones and her songs remain as popular and familiar as ever. She has sold over 70million reccords and received a string of awards, including ten Grammys, and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
