KEN LIVINGSTONE AND DAVID DAVIS

The current season of Speakers Breakfasts ended on Thursday 10th December with a colourful debate between Ken Livingstone and David Davis MP at 28 Portland Place.

Biding his time before attempting to win back City Hall in 2012, Ken is working on his autobiography, hosting a radio phone-in and supporting constituency Labour parties in their preparations for next year's campaign. When we asked him recently how the public might regain trust in politicians, he said it would be "by voting for people like me."

David was Shadow Home Secretary before resigning and re-capturing his seat in 2008, with a resounding 72% share of the vote. He has a background in science, business and the Territorial Army - and served as Europe Minister under John Major - but he's now firmly positioned as an independently minded backbencher with a particular interest in civil liberties.

IAN SMITH AND SIR BRIAN BENDER

Please join us for the next Speakers Breakfast on Thursday 26th November at 28 Portland Place, London W1. We will be joined by two powerful leadership speakers, with the emphasis on driving recovery.

Until recently, SIR BRIAN BENDER was Permanent Secretary to Lord Mandelson at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. Brian has overseen BERR's efforts to help business weather the recession and prepare for recovery. Amongst other themes he will address the challenge for both public and private sectors to achieve more with less, and the leadership lessons learned from managing crisis.

IAN SMITH was head of Oracle UK, Ireland and Israel. As Larry Ellison’s most successful MD, he secured the single biggest deal in Oracle history - for $650m. Amongst other roles, he now serves as President of the Institute of Customer Service. Ian explains how technology should not be used to automate ancient processes but to help re-invent them, and to free individuals to improve the customer experience.

Tea, coffee and croissants will be served from 8.30am. The first speaker will take the floor at 9.00, and after an opportunity for Q&A we are scheduled to finish by 10.15.

WEBB & POLLARD KICK OFF JLA SPEAKERS BREAKFAST SEASON

Wednesday 14th October saw the launch of the Autumn 09 season of Speakers Breakfasts, all of which are at 28 Portland Place, London W1. The first event saw Justin Webb offer an insight into the challenges facing Obama as he attempts to lead the G20 towards recovery. Before his recent move to Radio 4’s Today programme Justin served as BBC North America Editor, securing the only in-depth British press interview with President Obama at the White House (watch clip). Justin was joined by Fleet Street legend Eve Pollard. She has edited both the Sunday Mirror and Express, and launched Elle in the States – where she too came into contact with Presidents. She now works with the Competition Commission and Wellbeing of Women, and lectures on the media. Together Eve and Justin covered everything from the future of the newspaper industry to the future of the western world.

THE REAL VARIETY SHOW 2009

With possibly the strongest line-up in its 18 year history, this year’s Real Variety Show was a huge success. Over 800 event organisers and producers squeezed into Cadogan Hall to witness Mock the Week’s Hugh Dennis introduce a cornucopia of new talent. The next wave of British comedy was abundantly accounted for with Adams and ReaJon Richardson, Jack Whitehall, Shappi Khorsandi, Kevin Bridges and Alun Cochrane all providing belly laughs. Musical acts James Rhodes and The Red Hot Chilli Pipers added exciting flavours to old standards while football-freestyling Expansion Team and Strictly’s Fortuna and Rihanoff defied gravity in their own very different ways.

ENGLAND WIN ASHES

England's victory in The Ashes gives us an opportunity to highlight one of the funniest speakers on the after dinner circuit: Geoff Miller. The one-time vice captain of the national team now chairs the panel of test selectors, so he can claim some credit for this Summer's success; but that wouldn't be his style. Much of Geoff's appeal stems from his wonderfully self-deprecating sense of humour, which is one reason his speech entertains both fans of the game and those who wouldn't know one end of a bat from another.

THE REAL VARIETY SHOW - 2009

The line-up is now confirmed for this year's Real Variety Show on 21st September. Hugh Dennis will host, but as usual the bill will not be announced in advance. Suffice to say that it promises to measure up to previous shows - which have given a corporate 'premiere' to the likes of Dara O Briain, Michael McIntyre, Bill Bailey and The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.

EDINBURGH FRINGE 2009

Amongst the stand-ups already generating a buzz at this year's Edinburgh Festival are Kevin BridgesAlun Cochrane and Shappi Khorsandi. After one appearance on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, Bridges' fringe debut is already a sell-out. Those with more eclectic tastes might be drawn in by former One Show reporter Hardeep Singh Kohli, who appears in all his glory in The Nearly Naked Chef. WHAT'S IN

The recession is having a clear effect on clients' choice of keynote speakers. Economic commentators are having a buoyant year, as are experts in green business, lesser known (and so less expensive) motivational speakers and all those with proven experience of leading their organisation through hard times.
