Sound performance - breaking down the barriers to change

David & Carrie Grant

David Grant first made an impression as frontman of Linx, with four top twenty singles. He then re-emerged alongside Jaki Graham, clocking up another two hits - but David and his wife Carrie are now best known as Britain's leading vocal coaches, with a string of primetime TV credits.

Away from the studio, David and Carrie work with senior management teams around the world - bringing a fresh, feel-good approach to leadership training and team building. The emphasis is on shaping attitudes to change, awakening the passion to lead others and communicate a vision.

Using the songs Let It Be and Lean On Me, participants learn basic vocal technique, harmony and counter melody. Divided into groups, each form their own band, rehearse and then perform in a given musical genre. It might be country & western, rock 'n' roll, Italian opera or punk.

The experience cuts across function and hierarchy. Without singling out or embarrassing them, it takes everyone outside their comfort zone. It helps identify how we react to change, and see what becomes possible when confidence builds and the team really starts to work together.

For larger groups Carrie and David can also create a company anthem. Individual participants or teams each write a line about the organisation - including in-jokes. The results are then set to a familiar tune, with everyone enthusiastically joining in the chorus.
