EXTRACT FROM JLA SPEAKERS BREAKFAST

My first mentor was the only teacher who spoke to me as an adult, who gave me guidance and advice - he taught me that I had power, that teachers have to listen to you when you put up your hand. It was incredibly empowering to learn that I could get people to do my bidding.

In the world of work I discovered I had to play the game in order to get what I wanted. I realised that the rules of engagement are not just about hard work - it's about networking and becoming a problem-solver. I soon learned I had to become a valuable resource.

The greatest thing I took from The Apprentice was confidence. When you believe you are the best, in an environment where everyone else thinks the same, it is very empowering to come out on top. On a level playing field it doesn't matter what your background is - what matters is how determined you are to succeed. And I was extremely hungry.

Q&A

JLA: Is entrepreneurialism a natural condition or can it be taught?
TC: Entrepreneurialism is not a job, it's a mindset. It's all about how you approach risk. I worked hard, and when the opportunities came along I seized them.

JLA: Is it advantageous for a large company to foster entrepreneurialism?
TC: Entrepreneurs deal with the same systems, growth, attitudes, environment and risks as any company. Although the managers and directors may not be investing their own money, they are investing their time and reputation. Entrepreneurialism as a mind-set is advantageous to everyone.
