BIOGRAPHY
Robert Swan, polar explorer and environmental campaigner, is widely regarded as one of the most inspiring speakers in Europe. On completion of his first Icewalk expedition leading teenagers from 15 countries, he made history by becoming the first man to walk to both Poles.
As a child, Robert was so inspired by John Mills' portrayal of Scott of the Antarctic that he became determined to follow in his hero's footsteps. What he could not have imagined as a schoolboy is that one day he would accept the challenge of removing over a 1000 tons of waste from a Russian base on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Robert has mounted several expeditions in tandem with the United Nations. To mark UNESCO's 50th anniversary he led One Step Beyond - the largest and most diverse group ever to trek to Antarctica. Then came Project Earth, a series of environmental missions coinciding with his appointment as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.
Conference audiences are captivated by Robert's vision, integrity and humour - and his directness. It is a story of different and often difficult individuals coming together to make a team; of taking responsibility and achieving objectives; and of overcoming problems, responding to disaster and showing respect for the planet.
