BIOGRAPHY
Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio in 1930. As Commander on Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, he became the first person in history to step on the surface of the moon.
After serving as a naval aviator, Armstrong joined NASA as an engineer and test pilot at the Flight Research Centre in California, before transferring to astronaut status. He was then assigned as a pilot on Gemini 8, performing the first successful docking of two vehicles in space.
After Apollo 11, Armstrong was decorated by 17 countries and awarded the Presidential Medal for Freedom and the Congressional Medal of Honor. He went on to serve at NASA headquarters in Washington DC, actively involved in teaching and research.
In all, Neil Armstrong has flown over 200 different models of aircraft - including jets, rockets, helicopters and gliders. He remains Chairman of a computing systems company.
