BIOGRAPHY
Lewis Gordon Pugh is a swimmer, enviromentalist and former maritime lawyer. He has pioneered more swims around famous landmarks than any other swimmer in history, and is the only person to have completed a long distance swim in every ocean of the world. He is probably best recognised for becoming the first person to undertake a long distance swim at the North Pole.
Through swimming, Lewis has achieved a unique perspective on climate change. having witnessed retreating glaciers, decreasing sea ice, coral bleaching, severe droughts, and the migration of animals to colder climates on his numerous expeditions. As a result of these experiences, Lewis is determined to raise awareness about the fragility of our environment and to encourage everyone to take action.
In his speeches, Lewis discusses the three simple steps he uses to complete seemingly impossible tasks, shares his experiences of team-building and ensuring excellence, and talks about how to deal with both failure and success.
Lewis was educated at the University of Cape Town and the University of Cambridge. He now spends his time public speaking, lobbying world leaders to protect the environment and, of course, swimming.

Q&A
JLA: What is your definition of sustainability?
LP: We need to live in a way which safeguards nature and the lives of others, especially future generations. To achieve this, we need to cut consumption and pollution. We only have one world of resources and must share it fairly and peacefully.
JLA: Why is it key for business to take the lead, rather than politicians?
LP: We must all take responsibility. We don't have time to play 'follow the leader'. Politicians must set attractive incentives and frameworks to encourage a swift transition to sustainable business.
JLA: What will be the 'real-life' effects of climate change in the next twenty years?
LP: In most areas it means more extreme weather, such as droughts, floods and heatwaves. However, some island nations are already being affected by sea level rise and storm surges. Migration on a mass scale is likely over time.
