BIOGRAPHY
Lance Armstrong is the world champion cyclist, two time Olympian and seven time winner of the Tour de France.
In 96, whilst ranked No1, he was forced to retire from the Tour suffering excruciating pain. Tests revealed advanced testicular cancer which had spread to his lungs and his brain. Surgeons operated twice in the ensuing weeks; chances for his recovery were less than 50/50 as he began an aggressive form of chemotherapy.
Two years later Lance returned to cycling. After an uncertain early season, he won a race and was placed 4th in the championship. The next big challenge was the 1999 Tour de France. On his first day back, Lance won the stage - and went on to win the race by over seven minutes. He repeated the feat right up to 2005, breaking the field on the mountain stages and becoming the only man to win seven consecutive Tours.
Lance has since become a spokesperson for testicular and other forms of cancer. With the focus on 'survivorship', his foundation benefits research, promotes awareness and stresses the importance of early detection. He has also written two books and runs performance programmes to help people 'get fit, get fast and start winning.'
