BIOGRAPHY
Almost every Sunday, for the past two decades, John Craven has presented Countryfile, the UK's only rural and environmental issues programme. But for many thirty and forty-somethings, John will always be the genial, though sensible, anchor of BBC's Newsround. Throughout the seventies and eighties, he popped up every weekday teatime with a summary of the news, pitched at the pre-teen audience.
A familiar and dependable face in the shifting currents of British television, John stayed with Newsround for over three thousand editions, until he swapped his famous jumpers for the Countryfile cagoule.
Born in Leeds, John started his journalistic career as a reporter on the Harrogate Advertiser. After a spell with the BBC in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, he transferred to Bristol and presented his first network series, Search, a current affairs programme for children. In addition to his weekday Newsround duties, John was also a presenter on Saturday mornings, first with Swap Shop and then its successor, Saturday Superstore.
John co-presents Castle in the Country with Gloria Hunniford, along with Live from Chatsworth. He has fronted two series of Craven's Collectibles, annual Animal Sanctuary specials and reports for The National Lottery Live. He has written a number of books and contributes articles to many national magazines and newspapers.
John was awarded an OBE for services to children's and rural broadcasting. The Royal Television Society inducted him into its Hall of Fame and awarded him its prestigious Baird Medal 'in recognition of his outstanding contribution to television'.
