BIOGRAPHY
One of the most respected and informed figures in European finance, Dr Hans Tietmeyer was, for seven years, President of the Deutsche Bundesbank. He has published over one hundred articles on economics, and remains one of the most powerful voices in global finance.
After studying economics and social sciences at the universities of Munster, Bonn and Cologne, Dr Tietmeyer began his career as Executive Secretary of the Student Aid Organisation Cusanuswerk, before joining the Federal Ministry of Economics. He was promoted to Head of Division for general economic policy, then moved to the Ministry of Finance as Permanent Secretary and ultimately Secretary of State. He became responsible for financial policy, international monetary policy, EC matters and the preparation of world economic summits.
Dr Tietmeyer became a member of the Economic Policy Division of the European Commission, and worked closely with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). After leaving politics, Dr Tietmeyer became a member of the Directorate of the Deutsche Bundesbank and the Central Bank Council. He was elected President and the following year became Chairman of the G10 Group of Central Bank Governors.
