Lord Douglas Hurd's extraordinary career, standing, as he did, centre-stage at some of the pivotal moments of recent history, has made him one of the wisest and most respected elder statesmen in British politics.

Lord Hurd's tenure as the British Foreign Secretary was eventful to say the least. The turbulent years from the late eighties to the mid-nineties, which included the Gulf War, saw immense changes, particularly in Eastern Europe. Lord Hurd headed Britain's diplomatic response to the end of the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the break-up of Yugoslavia and the vicious wars that followed.

Douglas Hurd spent fourteen years as a professional diplomat. He entered politics as Political Secretary to Edward Heath, who was then the Conservative Leader of the Opposition. For twenty-three years Lord Hurd represented the constituency of mid-Oxfordshire (now Whitney), the seat now held by David Cameron.

In government, Lord Hurd served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, paving the way for the Anglo Irish Agreement. As Home Secretary, he promoted prison reform, including greater rehabilitation of offenders. During his memorable time as Foreign Secretary, under John Major, he fostered better relations with the European Community, repairing the damage done during Margaret Thatcher's Eurosceptic last years and he saw a reunified Germany enter the Community.

Since retiring from Parliament, Lord Hurd has held senior positions in NatWest, Coutts & Co and British Invisibles. He is also a Member of the Global Leadership Foundation, which promotes good governance around the world. Lord Hurd is a prolific writer, with fifteen books to his credit, including thrillers, historical biographies, and his memoirs.
