First on the Isle of Man TT, then on Formula One, Murray Walker has been a motor racing commentator for over 50 years. He is both admired for his expertise and loved for his occasional on-air gaffes, like "The car in front is absolutely unique except for the car behind it, which is identical."
After switching over from the BBC, Murray led ITV's coverage until the end of the 2001 season. He continued to work on Grand Prix Masters for various broadcasters, and took on the role of ambassador for Honda's Formula One team - but he has never ruled out a return to the main stage.
Murray has enjoyed close relationships with the last three British world champions: the late James Hunt, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill; but he believes Lewis Hamilton is of a different order. After Schumacher's long reign, Hamilton has re-ignited home interest and won Walker's praise for his maturity and flair.
Murray Walker's own contribution is immense, thanks to what the Daily Telegraph has described as 'the sheer force and sincerity of his enthusiasm.' He has published 14 books, including his autobiography Unless I'm Very Much Mistaken, and enriched the sport with some unforgettable moments: "There is nothing wrong with the car except it's on fire."
