Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of popular music, Mike Read presents an entertaining evening, based on his long-running series Pop Quiz, testing guests' knowledge of old favourites from the seventies and eighties. Complete with sound cues, video clips and live music, Mike poses questions about the tunes and the big personalities behind them.
Radio One's longest-serving breakfast show host and recipient of ten Broadcaster of the Year Awards, Mike is also a poet and a performer and composer of stage musicals, famously playing the title role in Cliff: The Musical! which he also wrote.
His broadcasting career began on a local radio station in Reading, where he co-hosted with Steve Wright. He went on to Radio Luxembourg, after which he joined Radio One, taking over the breakfast show from DLT and hosting it for five years. After thirteen years with the BBC, Mike moved to Capital Gold and was subsequently heard on Jazz FM and Classic FM.
Television work includes hosting the long-running Saturday Superstore, Top of the Pops and Pop Quiz. Mike also entered the I'm A Celebrity jungle, for the third series, widely regarded as the best ever; for spawning the romance between Jordan and Peter Andre; for Johnny Rotten walking off; for the friction between Jennie Bond and Lord Brockett and for the triumphant crowning of ex-Atomic Kitten and frozen scampi promoter Kerry Katona.
A prolific songwriter, Mike's compositions have been recorded by Cliff Richard, Justin Hayward, Chris Rea and Steve Harley. He has written several volume of poetry, a biography of Rupert Brooke, two crime novels and numerous books about the charts.
