BIOGRAPHY
One of fourteen children brought up in a Dublin tenement, Bill was on the streets from the age of six selling fruit, scarves and football programmes. He left school at thirteen, secured a job in a Ford dealership and the rest is history. He is now Ireland's equivalent of Sir Alan Sugar, as the big boss in their version of The Apprentice.
After his early break, Bill set up his own business which grew into the biggest Ford retailer in the country. His next move was to take on the troubled Renault franchise, quickly turning it around. The result was Glencullen, with an annual turnover of over 400 million Euros. Bill had become one of Ireland's top business people.
In his autobiography It's a Long Way from Penny Apples, Bill gives a vivid account of almost unbelievable poverty and deprivation - but his story is also one of courage and joy. Bill's mother's words continue to inspire him: "the best thing I can give you is the independence to stand on your own feet."
In presentations as in his business book Golden Apples, Bill's mantra centres on iron discipline. He believes in extracting maximum returns on investment, and learning to make your own luck. As Director of the Irish Youth Foundation, he also talks about giving chances to kids like himself.
