Chris Smith New Labour’s first Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport established the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. A keen mountaineer, he has scaled all the ‘Munros’: 277 mountains above 3,000 feet in Scotland. When a Tory-controlled council dropped a policy banning sexual discrimination, Chris engaged in the debate by announcing his homosexuality. It made him the first openly gay MP at Westminster.
